The poems in MISO MERMAID by MARGARYTA GOLOVCHENKO track the turbulent course of a relationship, with continual quivers and disruptions to the flow. The chapbook seeks to reflect the privilege and complexity of experiencing a relationship from start to finish–a glimmer of hope, a bittersweet happiness, a duality of reality and fantasy in minds trying to find both solitude and solidarity.
The Universe in the Eyelids
A day of conversation gives domination rights
to lilac bushes in the dream garden,
Spring begging to remind she too has snow globes
of her own design. It was her way
of bringing us back together at a time
when ice sang against your lips before they graced hers,
or escaped through the fingertips while I thawed
over a bowl of soup in mid-May.
MARGARYTA GOLOVCHENKO is an undergrad student at the University of Toronto where she is an editor for the campus’ only speculative fiction journal, The Spectatorial. She is also a staff reader for Ember: A Journal of Luminous Things. She has possibly heard every joke in the book when it comes to her name, and every guess when it comes to her nationality (hint: Ukrainian). Her work has found a home in places like The Impressment Gang, The Teacup Trail, Vending Machine Press, and (parenthetical). When not maneuvering around her mountain of to-be-read books she can be found sharing her (mis)adventures on Twitter: @Margaryta505. Miso Mermaid is her debut chapbook.
